Dry eye syndrome

Dry eye syndromeDry eye syndrome may also be related to excessive intake of fats in the diet. It is a painful and debilitating disease that particularly affects women and is characterized by a reduction in the quality and quantity of watery eyes. Symptoms include the emergence of a firestorm that, left untreated, can lead to scarring or ulceration of the cornea and vision loss. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Schepens Eye Research Institute (Boston, Massacusetts) reached that conclusion after studying the eating habits of 37,000 women.

According to the coordinator of the study, Biljana Miljanovic, “observed that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids, common in oily fish and nuts, is related to a protective effect for the eyes, in contrast, a higher proportion of omega 6 present in oil dressing or sauces, may increase the risk of dry eye syndrome. The researcher stressed that only the discrimination of omega 3 versus omega 6 in the diet reduces the risk of dry eye by almost 70%.
