Methadone addiction is a serious problem. Millions of unsuspecting individuals have fallen prey to the illusion that taking Methadone would somehow handle their addiction to other drugs such as heroin or other opiates. A person who is dependent upon taking regular and frequent doses of methadone hydrochloride characterizes methadone addiction. A person with a methadone dependency will develop a tolerance for methadone.
This means the person needs to take more methadone in order to achieve the same effect. Using methadone as a drug replacement for heroin addiction is common and is not a new practice. Many opiate addicts attend methadone clinics subsidized by the government to help them overcome their addiction. These programs provide clear benefits, two of which are lower incidences of drug-related crimes and reduced cases of diseases transmitted via shared needles.
However, getting off methadone is an equally uphill task for addicts. Methadone is an opioid and its actions resemble those of the opiates it replaces. Medical detox procedures are the best way of helping those addicted to drugs to get their life back. All forms of addiction can be terrible, in that, the addicted person has completely lost control over a vital aspect of their life, but addiction to hard drugs can be simply terrifying.
