Diabetes is a disease of the modern lifestyle, which increasingly affects more people around the world. Looking prevention, has discovered a new drug that could reduce the risk of lung cancer. Here we tell you more about this finding, and the pros and cons of this drug called pioglitazone.

Driven by current lifestyle with an abundance of high calorie foods, while the daily duties are to remain seated and low physical activity on most of the time, a disease that has increased during the recent decades has diabetes.

It is said that a person has diabetes when the level of glucose or blood sugar is high, because the insulin that is responsible for converting glucose into energy in the body, can not do their job. This means that, if unchecked, may eventually damage other body functions and affect, for example, the eyes, kidneys and cardiovascular system.

While diabetes can sometimes cause symptoms (such as dry mouth, excessive thirst and increased urination) are often detected during medical checkups with a blood test. In some cases, the detected glucose level is not as high as in people with diabetes but not found in the values that are normally accepted as healthy. When this happens, we say that the person is pre-diabetic.

The good news is that prevent or delay diabetes and the control it once it occurs, can be achieved by implementing changes in our habits and a healthy lifestyle, if we think of the benefits it provides, does not require much sacrifice.

But you know how difficult it can be to avoid the food that you like, spend more time (and / or money) to the kitchen to reduce the consumption of fast food or miss the favorite TV series for exercise … You yourself / a then you’ll realize what things are most difficult job will change.

So a group of researchers subsidized by Takeda Pharmaceuticals laboratory set out to find a drug that could be useful in these cases and found a new medicine that could help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in pre-diabetic people. The medication is called pioglitazone (marketed under the brand name Actos, by Takeda Pharmaceuticals), and after being evaluated for about two years in a test group was shown to reduce diabetes risk by 72%.

A similar drug had been tested before under the trade name Avandia, but then was banned in the United States since it was found that this could be associated with heart problems. This did not occur with Actos. By contrast, the new drug also may help protect heart health, reduce triglycerides and increase the amount of good cholesterol.

Does this mean you can forget you’re wearing lifestyle and healthy habits to rely solely on this medicine and you can devote to leisurely eat any food you want? Unfortunately, not everything that glitters is gold. Are currently analyzing the possible side effects of Actos, since it is believed that in some people, can cause bone thinning and fractures, weight gain and fluid retention, among others.

Therefore, although this finding represents the beginning in the prevention of type 2 diabetes and could be recommended in some cases, when specialists are not recommended for everyone.

The suggestion is still that there is nothing better than keeping an active lifestyle and healthy eating to prevent and control diabetes. Cheer up! You’ll feel better, have more energy, and your life can still be fun.

* Be physically active and practice a plan of exercise every day, even 30 minutes daily.
* Eating a proper diet: eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains and less fat and refined sugar. And never skip meals.
* Maintain a healthy weight.
* Take your medications as prescribed. Some people need to take pills, insulin or both.

And you, you are eating a healthy diet with proper exercise plan? How long have you not visit your doctor? Be honest with yourself and making a healthy choice. Already time to re-make these exams? Do not wait any longer. Check your sugar at home with regular visits to your doctor will let you know that your diabetes is under control to stay healthy or to adjust as necessary.

A recent study found that people with diabetes who visit doctors more often fail to control the condition of a more efficient way than those who do not as often. Do you have controlled your diabetes? In this article we tell you more details on this finding and why it is important to keep your level of blood sugar in check.

If you have diabetes, keeping blood glucose levels at an appropriate level may be easier if you visit your doctor more often. This according to a recent study developed by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA, which was published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.

To determine whether more frequent medical consultations may help patients with diabetes control their condition in a shorter period, researchers analyzed data on nearly 26,500 patients who visited primary care physicians in Boston, for at least two years, between January 2000 and January 2009.

Thus, they found that patients who visited a primary care doctor every few weeks achieved faster control of their blood glucose (blood sugar), blood pressure and cholesterol, very successful as the level control of glucose reduces complications related to diabetes. Unfortunately, most diabetic patients fail to maintain their blood glucose within the limits they should.

Currently, treatment guidelines for diabetes do not specify the frequency of checks on the condition, although the recommendation is that you do control two to four times a year to review what has been your level of blood sugar over the past months, including hemoglobin A1C (which lets you know your diabetes control in two months), how is your weight (if you need to download or not) and how is your blood pressure level (which should be less than 130/80 ).

During these visits, the doctor will also review with you the values of the daily test blood sugar they used to do (should you keep a record for the same purpose), will examine your foot to rule you have minor injuries or infections and talk to you about your diet and exercise plan that you practice.

In addition, at least once a year your doctor will be more controlled and measured to blood sugar, weight and blood pressure also assess total cholesterol (which must be less than 200), LDL “cholesterol bad “(which should be less than 100 or 70 if you have heart problems), HDL or” good cholesterol “(must be 40 or older) and triglycerides (which must be less than 150).

Once a year, at least, the doctor will also test for microalbuminuria (protein in urine) to rule out the beginning of kidney damage, he’ll ask the results of eye exam by an ophthalmologist (the physician who specializes in eyes) to rule out the beginning of retinal damage and tell you if you need any vaccinations, like flu or influenza, as well as any other strategy to keep you healthy and your diabetes under control.

Why it is important to keep your levels of blood sugar in check is something you probably already know but it never hurts to remember. Diabetes is a disease that can be silent, ie it can often give no symptoms and you feel good.

However, slowly damaging your body and your health and long term, can cause several problems. For example, cardiovascular (heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular attack), eyes (diabetic retinopathy lead to blindness) and kidney (diabetic nephropathy: renal failure and dialysis), nerves (diabetic neuropathy), in Finally, it can affect many body systems.

While the root of yacon is currently being marketed to diabetics and people on diet … no lowering effect on blood sugar has been published in humans or animals for tubers (leaves only). Because it contains a type of sugar is not metabolized (it is also much lower in calories), is certainly a substituent regular sugar sweetener for diabetics and dieters. Consumers should be aware that however, the yacon root will not help diabetics to reduce or maintain levels of blood sugar as some are trying to sell (and indeed the tuber does not contain glucose and fructose).

Today in local markets yacon root is considered a fruit and is sold with other fruits like pineapple or apples (not in so large and diverse section of potatoes from the market). The tubers have a wonderful sweet flavor improves when dried in the sun until the skin is wrinkled a bit. Meals are then peeled and hand cut into salads, steamed or fried. Tubers are also squeezed and then concentrated syrups and sweeteners (such as dark corn syrup) and then dried and concentrated to produce solid blocks of dark brown sweet called molasses. Here in the U.S. various syrups yacon relatively new are now available at local health food and natural product markets as a low-calorie alternative to corn syrup or molasses. Try them … are great!

Unfortunately, there are one or two capsules of yacon in the market today that are making claims or pointing to studies of blood sugar regulation, and / or anti-microbial actions actually belong only to the leaves of yacon and not the root / tuber. If you take yacon in the form of capsules, the only real benefit is as a prebiotic to help the bacteria of the intestinal flora and possibly increase natural production of beta-glucan immunostimulant (but certainly need much more than one or two 500 mg capsules … remember that they eat the tuber per pound in the Andes, and not per gram). To help the blood sugar metabolism, search yacon leaf in capsules or simply cut leaves and sold in packages. There are only a handful of products to choose from U.S. market since it is a relatively new natural remedy for this country.

The hypoglycemic action of the leaves of yacon has been demonstrated in laboratory studies with normal and diabetic rats by researchers in Argentina. A decoction of the leaves of yacon reported to produce a significant decrease in blood sugar levels in normal rats when administered by injection or orally.

In glucose tolerance tests, a single application of a decoction of the leaf, decreased levels of plasma glucose in normal rats. In contrast, a single oral application or injection of the decoction of the leaves of yacon had no effect on levels of plasma glucose in rats with diabetic condition induced in the laboratory.

However, the administration of a lower dose of leaf tea instead of water for 30 days produced a significant hypoglycaemic effect in rats with diabetes induced in laboratory condition. The mechanism of action of these leaf extracts were like those of insulin in the way that affected the metabolism of glucose. An in vitro study reported that the leaves also have antioxidant actions as well as liver protective action to reduce free radical damage in liver cells of rats (caused by alcohol).

Tubers

In a 4-month oral study with rats, researchers in Argentina reported that 340 mg and 6800 mg of yacon given orally to rats twice a day showed no hypoglycemic action or decrease in blood sugar, nor showed any toxicity.

These compounds help give the sweet potato flavor but most of these types of sugar are not easily digested or metabolized by humans. For this reason, Yacon shows much promise as a food for diabetics and as a base for low-calorie sweeteners. These oligofructanos have been classified recently as “prebiotics.”

Since they are not digested in the human gastrointestinal tract, they are transported to the colon where they are fermented by selected species of intestinal microflora (especially Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus) and helps balance the intestinal flora and aids digestion.

A laboratory study suggests that the prebiotic effect of yacon tuber extracts during the fermentation process increases the natural production of beta-glucans that act as a nonspecific immunostimulant. In addition to these sweet compounds, yacon tubers are also rich in free fructose, glucose and sucrose as well as inulin and starch. Both the tuber and the leaves of the plant contain chlorogenic acid, ferulic and caffeic known to provide an antioxidant effect. That certain sesquiterpene lactones can be found in the leaves of yacon plants have shown antibacterial and antifungal activities in laboratory study.

Other chemicals documented in the yacon include: y-cadinene, caffeic-acid, 3-caffeoylquinic-acid, chlorogenic acid-, 2.4-dicaffeoylaltraric-acid, 2.5-dicaffeoylaltraric-acid, 3.5-dicaffeoylaltraric-acid, 3.5-dicaffeoylquinic-acid, enhydrin, ferulic-acid, fluctuanin, Gallic-acid, gentisic-acid, inulin, melampolides, oligofructans, beta-pinene, protocatechuic-acid-rosmarinic acid, sonchifolin, tryptophan, 2.3, 5-tricaffeoylaltraric-acid, 2,4,5-tricaffeoylaltraric-acid, and uvedalin.

Yacon was discovered on land burial of many centuries before the Incas. The first written record of yacon was in 1615 when Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala included it in a list of 55 crops cultivated by Andean natives.South American herbal medicine systems are taken raw tubers as a diuretic for kidney and bladder problems while decuecen leaves for cystitis, hepatosis, and nephrosis in Bolivia. In Peru, the leaves are prepared by forming a warm poultice and used externally for myalgia and rheumatism. In Brazil the leaves of the plant are prepared by forming a tea as a natural remedy for diabetes.

Yacon is a perennial herb that grows 1.5 to 3 m tall with dark green leaves similar to celery. Each plant forms a ground kills 4 to 20 large fleshy tuberous roots.

Yacon is a member of the sunflower family and as it grows in warm, temperate Andean valleys, can be found at altitudes up to 3200 meters. It is native to the lower regions of the Andes and the cloud forests of South America and can be found in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia. It is now widely cultivated for its edible roots throughout the Andean South America and was being exported to Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Czech Republic, and even U.S. as a new root crop cultivation.Fresh yacon tubers are crisp and juicy with a delicate flavor reminiscent of apple or melon and a surprising sweetness that increases with the parking. Usually eaten raw, (fresh or sun dried) and steamed, baked, roasted, or liquefied syrupy. In the Peruvian Andes where yacon production is flourishing, one can find yacon processed in most local markets … from pancake syrup to soft drinks, jam, breakfast cereals, and puddings.

Behind this issue can be a very common disorder such as hypertension or diabetes, so experts urge that we not only experienced by older men.

However, research from the University of California may provide a possible solution: have found that pomegranate juice, which is rich in ellagic acid, has powerful antioxidant beneficial to male sexual health.
