One in 4 people will be affected by a mental disorder in their lives according to WHO statistics, published in 2001. An estimated one out of every 4 families in the world has a member with a mental disorder (Saraceno, 2004).

According to the Ministry of Health, an estimated 15 million people suffer from mental disorders. The results of the latest National Comorbidity Survey (ENEP) indicate that 28.6% of the population had any of the 23 disorders of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) sometime in their life and only one in 10 patients receive specialized care.
