Chocolate good for liver

The key on the health benefits of chocolate is cocoa, and therefore it is important to mention that dark chocolate is the one that shines in this regard. Cocoa is rich in flavanols – a type of antioxiodantes-chemicals which help to smooth muscle cells of blood vessels so that they relax and widen, promoting blood circulation.

According to a group of Spanish researchers, dark chocolate slows down the usual increase in abdominal blood pressure after meals, which can reach dangerous levels in patients with cirrhosis and, in severe cases, lead to a rupture of blood vessels.

Details on the survey of 21 terminally ill patients with liver ills:

- Those who received a meal with bitter chocolate with 85% cocoa had a significantly lower blood pressure in the liver compared with those who ate white chocolate.

- Researchers say these findings could lead to that in the future, patients with liver problems could receive any treatment involving consumption of dark chocolate.
