Bunions (Hallux Valgus): Symptoms and Diagnosis
Definition
It is a relatively common bone deformity occurs when the toe, also called the great toe or hallux, is diverted to the second finger or toe (valgus, experts say), resulting in notable bump on the inner edge foot.
A bunion is a progressive condition, which means that does not appear immediately but over the years and in this way, the angle of the metatarsal bone (located at the base of great toe) is gradually changing due to hereditary factors and use of inappropriate footwear, to produce the deviation feature.
When corrective action is taken is likely to occur severe deformity: the periosteum (membrane covering the bone) and joint tissues thicken, forming dense fibrous mass that produces immobility and throbbing pain. Also, the skin looks red region increases its temperature and fluid accumulation becomes infected. Read the rest of this entry »
Robert Lanza, the man who made cloning a reality
Robert Lanza was born and grew up in Massachusetts where he first changed the genetics of chicken in his basement. This brought the Harvard Medical School’s researcher attention towards him for which he later appeared at the university with his results of his experiment. He had his mentors in B F Skinner, Jonas Salk and Christiaan Barnard for the next ten years with who he worked with closely. He received BA and MD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania where he was also a Benjamin Franklin Scholar as well as a University Scholar.
Robert Lanza was amongst the team who cloned the world’s first early stage human embryos for the sole purpose of generating embryonic stem cells. He further went on to demonstrate the technique used in pre implantation genetic diagnosis could be used to create embryonic stem cells without the destruction of embryonic.
In 2001, he was the first to clone an endangered species- a Gaur or otherwise called as Indian Bison. Robert Lanza later in 2003 cloned a wild ox from frozen skin cells of a dead animal which had died 25 years ago in a zoo. He along with his team also demonstrated that nuclear transplantation can be used to reverse aging and to generate immune compatible tissues. It also helped in the first organ grown in a laboratory from cloned cells. His team also found a way to cure some forms of blindness using advanced cell technology, which helped in getting stem cells grow into retinal cells. He also won awards like Rave Award from Wired Magazine and in 2006; he won the All Star award for biotechnology from Mass High Tech, a journal.
Effects of Fluoride on Health
Symbol F, atomic number 9, a member of the halogen family with atomic number and lower weight. Although only isotope with atomic weight 19 is stable, have been prepared artificially radioactive isotopes with atomic weights 17 and 22, the element fluorine is more electronegative, and by a significant margin, the most energetic non-metallic element chemically.
Properties: The elemental fluorine is a pale yellow gas at normal temperatures. The smell of the element is something that is still in doubt. The reactivity of the element is so large that reacts easily at room temperature, with many other elementary substances, including sulfur, iodine, phosphorus, bromine and most metals.
Since the reaction products with non-metals are liquids or gases, the reactions continue to consume it completely, often with considerable production of heat and light. In reactions with metals forms a protective metal fluoride blocks a subsequent reaction unless the temperature rises. Aluminum, nickel, magnesium and copper fluoride such films are protective. Probiotics and Their Uses
Probiotics are most commonly known as ‘friendly bacteria’ off the back of numerous probiotic infused breakfast yogurts. However, there is an awful lot more to them than keeping a ‘healthy tummy’. As understanding of how microorganisms in our body work, the more useful applications will be found for probiotics as a supplement, medicine or vaccine.
As it stands, they are currently promoted largely as supplements and in foods for the purposes of helping to manage IBS and related conditions, and to promote general health on the basis of ‘a healthy gut is a healthy body’.
However, there are a raft of interesting developments in the field of probiotics that could end up with these friendly microorganisms becoming the basis of an entirely new branch of medicine. Scientists are currently investigating uses of probiotics in reducing obesity, fighting colon cancer and fighting AIDS.
One of the most interesting approaches is in developing designer probiotics to mimic receptors in the body to form a block between possible infection and the body’s own receptors.
For example, infection causing bacteria enters the body, it would normally attach itself to receptors in the large intestine, thus forming a bond with the body and starting the infection. But this time, there are probiotics mimicking the body’s receptors in their way. Not knowing the difference, the harmful bacteria latches onto the probiotic rather than the body. The infection never starts.
Although, as with most areas of probiotics research, this is still in very early stages, if scientists can get it to work, this is clearly an approach that could be used for a wide variety of applications, particularly if the microbes can be tailored to combat specific infections, thus creating a new biological medicine for specific conditions.
As it stands, probiotics supplements may encourage good digestive health and by corollary general wellbeing, but it’s already clear that as the science progresses we may find probiotics to be a much bigger part of our medicine. Then again, it all might come to nothing. Either way, it’s an area of research well worth watching.
Sick Building Syndrome: In Search of Healthy Building
If we talk about sick building syndrome (SBS) is almost inevitable to recall the case of Gas Natural in Barcelona a few years ago. Specifically in 2006, 273 of its employees were semicircular lipoatrophy. An unusual symptom is a loss of a semicircular area of subcutaneous fat tissue located mainly in the front of the thighs. The causes, though not completely clarified, they had to do with a sick building, causing health problems for many of its occupants.
Immediately, one would think that talking about a sick building we are talking about an old and faulty construction. Not really. WHO estimated at third modern office buildings in the world where more than 20% of the occupants suffer symptoms of eye, nose or sore throat, nausea, headache, etc.
A modern and healthy …
If we go back in time in search of news, we find that this syndrome is very modern and comes in buildings designed to be energy efficient. We have to go back to 1976 to meet one of the first cases. In a hotel in Philadelphia during a convention of the American Legion, the presence of a highly infectious bacteria, hitherto unknown, air conditioning, killing dozens of people. The bacterium was named after Legionella and is now completely controlled.
Fortunately, it was an exceptional case and the consequences of working in a sick building are usually mild, in the form of irritation, headaches, coughing, drowsiness, etc., And negatively affects productivity and absenteeism.
However, although the risk factors that make a building “sick” can be many and varied, the majority of cases are due to air pollution inside the building. That is, modern buildings with air conditioning and insulated from the outside to avoid energy losses.
And besides, there are too sick buildings. In a study of 500 buildings in the U.S. and Europe found that 60% of air filtration systems were not set properly or were inadequate, that 33% of outdoor air intakes were closed in order to optimize conservation energy, that 22% of the air ducts were too dirty, and that 36% of air conditioning systems are contaminated with other aspects such as rotting tree leaves or dead insects.
Sound can accelerate the healing
Treatment of wounds with high intensity ultrasound can significantly improve the cure rate, according to a study
An ultrasound device that is activated by sound waves in chronic wounds such as leg ulcers, is used to accelerate the healing process.
Research shows that treating wounds with high intensity ultrasound helps …
clean the wound of debris and can significantly improve the speed at which they heal.
Now a trial is underway to study the exact percentage, because chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers are difficult to cure and a significant number of people who suffer from chronic wounds that have diabetes because one of every six people with diabetes will develop non-healing ulcer.
There are a number of treatments, from antibiotics to surgery, but in many cases the wounds will not heal for weeks, months or years and in severe cases, amputation of a limb becomes necessary.
When Teething Babies to

Cut and rash on the gums that often irritate and sensitize produce babies, even, it is common that during this process, the boys cry more often and even submit pictures of a cold, temperature, and diarrhea.
About four to seven months beginning the first little teeth out of milk. Relieve your baby’s gums is not easy, perhaps the pampering are the only proven effective. However, in the market there are some painkillers that can quell the symptoms. Among them are the anesthetic and antiseptic gels and gels prepared from soothing herbs such as calendula, which are passed with the tip of the finger on the baby’s gums.
They also tend to be very effective essential oils and homeopathic remedies, such as that resulting from the mixture of oil of oregano, thyme and sweet almonds. Of course, not be ruled out other more traditional methods like rubbing a gasita carefully soaked in cool water on the gums or giving him a teething ring filled with cold water.
Massages in the Hands

Self massage is a very simple technique and practice it in our hands can also be the key to feeling better. The first step is knowing what results you can provide us with every move and, as in all cases, do so carefully, regularly and methodically.
