Kidney Cancer : Treatment

width="280"Treatment

We recommend surgical removal of the whole kidney or part of it (nefrectomíanefrectomía). This may include removal of the bladder, the surrounding tissues or lymph nodes.

In some patients, surgery can help to remove a small number of tumors that have spread (metastasized).

Radiation therapy does not usually work for renal cell carcinoma, so that is not used frequently. In some cases, hormone treatments can reduce tumor growth.

Chemotherapy is usually not effective in treating renal cell carcinoma. The drug interleukin 2 (IL-2), which works by helping the body’s own immune system to destroy cancer cells, can serve a small number of patients, but is very toxic. They have used other chemotherapy drugs, but patients generally do not live long once the disease has spread outside the kidney.

Newer therapies include sorafenib (Nexavar), sunitinib (Sutent) and temsirolimus (Torisel). Has also been used biologic drug bevacizumab (Avastin).
